What’s this about Prebiotics?
We wonder about the food that we buy for our dogs, and at best, we hope that what we’re offering is really what it say it is.
But, simply because we put the food in the dish and our beloved canine pal eats it, it does not necessarily mean that he’s getting all of the nutrients that are required to keep him at the top of his game, and in the best of health. Even premium dog foods sometimes fall slightly short of what they “should” be, for any number of reasons.
Everyone knows that if your dog gets a nutritious diet, this helps to keep him healthy and happy. Recently, the pet food industry has begun to look at the role of helpful bacteria in canine nutrition. Humans have known about this for a while, and there’s probably not anyone who doesn’t just love a cool dish of bacteria filled yogurt for breakfast.
In the digestive tract of your dog, the bacteria help to break down the food that he eats, into managable and absorbable parts. The good bacteria allow for your dog to get the most nutrition and vitamin/mineral absorption possible, if they are actually there and are functioning at their capacity.
Sometimes, a sick or recuperating dog, a dog that is on certain medications or an animal that has recently had surgery does not have adequate good bacteria to assist in digestive absorption and he will not get the most nutrition from the food.
This is where the use of prebiotics can lend a bacterial hand! They work to stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the dog’s digestive tract. These non-digestibles help in mineral absorption and stimulate immunities in the dog’s body. There have been studies that have proven that prebiotics even help to eliminate the risk of colon cancers in dogs.
